HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF THERAPY FOR EACH CLIENT

'Don't believe everything you think' . . . W.Dyer

Therapy is not a 'one size fits all' solution. People are unique in how they respond to their life circumstances. Often my clients experience damaging thoughts, which keep recycling, and they don't know how to find their way out. Also, my clients often have serious or resistant emotional or physical problems, so I use several forms of therapy that are 'problem specific' and blend with their 'personalities or needs'.

If it is a simple problem, traditional therapeutic methods will likely work just fine. If it is a deeper psychological problem, it may exist within one's nervous system, and require an entirely different approach. So I use several types of therapies for much more comprehensive and deeper healing. I will make it simple.

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING (SE) UTILIZES THE NATURAL WAY THE BRAIN FUNCTIONS

'SE restores the wisdom of the body & trusts the messages our bodies give us' by Dr. Peter Levine

This is where your BRAIN comes in. YES you can expect the normal kind of therapy when coming to my office, but you won't be limited to one way of solving your problems. I have found that the most successful treatments work with all levels of your brain.

When doing Somatic Experiencing SE therapy, you will find that it gently releases you from trauma and can create a transformation or personal awakening. This is very different from symptomatic relief, because it creates an actual 'shift' that frees the body to regain its capacity to regulate itself, and may be the right choice for recovery. I will incorporate other therapy methods to help you with subconscious and sleep problems and for general relaxation. SE works well with family and relationship counseling - so people don't waste their time relating in ways that do no good. The goal is for you to feel mastery over your problems, safe in your skin, and bonded in your relationships.

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR INVOLUNTARY "FLIGHT" "FIGHT" "FREEZE" SURVIVAL RESPONSES

'Human responses to threat are primarily instinctive and biological' by Dr. Peter Levine

You have probably heard of "fight" or "flight" survival responses. Survival responses are associated with all levels of coping. If we are successful in getting away from the causes of our distress, or can fight it off, then usually we are okay. If we can't, then we experience an internal "freeze" state and it causes many mental and physical problems in our nervous system. One example would be of a person who has panic attacks and suffers from their thoughts as well as their painful body symptoms.

These Neuroscience and Somatic healing approach includes not only what a person THINKS AND FEELS (as in traditional therapy); but also how the MIND PROCESSES those thoughts, and how the BODY EXPERIENCES them. When you understand how this works, it is like having a map to a grand treasure, or the secret to one's heart.

TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AVAILABLE

Cognitive Behavioral                 (working with dysfunctional or damaging thoughts)
Somatic Experiencing SE          (psycho-bio-physiological therapy for body distress & trauma)

Neuroacoustic Balancing           (stress reduction)
Imagery/Hypnotherapy              (mindfulness, reduce inner conflict, tame subconscious)
Neuroscience                            (mind body physiological functioning)

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT IF YOU COME TO SEE ME

'When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change' . . . W.Dyer

We begin by meeting in a confidential session in my office. You tell me about yourself, what you believe your problems are, and how you would like your life to be different. I will be honest with you about what I think, provide helpful information, and explain the types of therapy I believe would benefit you most. If we decide to work together, I'll create a custom treatment plan. You will likely find therapy easier and quicker than you expected.

Over the years I have worked in corporate America; for several healthcare and legal organizations: such as HMOs, insurance companies, hospitals, Work Comp, personal injury, mediation; and as a group home director for adolescents - with the Dept of Children & Family Services, and Dept of Probation.

My most valued career choice is that of a clinician in private practice and working with people like you.
