Clinical and Community Psychology and Counseling
Dr. Frances Woods

For one person, sound nutrition, exercise, relaxation/meditation practices and a change in thought patterns is a program that can affect other areas of life that are troubled.  For another person, the start place may be improving relationships with a spouse first, to make time and space for changes in education, employment or community activities.  For yet another client, psychoeducation about how to manage a biologically based illness, combined with referral to a physician who will prescribe and monitor pharmaceuticals or nutriceuticals is what is needed to begin a process of change.  Some people have had a significant trauma in their past and need to desensitize this trauma, and perhaps find ethical legal help in order to move forward in life.  Parents may have difficulty responding to an adolescent’s or growing adult’s emerging sexual identity and benefit from bibliotherapy, referral to a minister and/or a support group and deep work on their own core values and identity.  Other persons might need parenting help, mediation for post or mid-divorce co-parenting, or counseling for their children or adolescents.  We are all different and the resources we already have and those we need to develop are individual to us.  That is why this holistic or integrated approach is so important.  And that is why our job is not only to help you with what we can do ourselves, but also to help you by referring you to other practitioners who have the expertise you need.  They might include physicians, religious or spiritual practitioners, social workers, neuropsychologists, learning specialists, employment or career counselors, nutritionists, exercise specialists, artists’ groups, meditation teachers, etc.
