Natural disasters can cause destruction of property, loss of financial resources, and personal injury or illness.  People experiencing a natural disaster can develop severe post-traumatic stress disorders or withdraw into states of deprssion very quckly.  These symptoms may last beyond the rebuilding phase.

When communities that experience a natural disaster it must absorb the impacts of these destructive events.  Many local communities lose so much-together.  Communities experience population change, cultural shifts and finanical hardship.

The possesions can be replaced.  Homes can be rebuilt.  Communites will survive but do change.  The pain of these thngs can lead to PTSD, depression, anxiety and just plain STRESS.  Time will adjust these feelings.  It may take 6 months or more to feel some relief.  These types of effects can be experienced by the entire family.  It is not uncommon to a rise in child abuse, spouse abuse, alcoholism and suicide.  Recovering from a disaster either natural or man made takes time. 

If mental health resources are offered by either the Red Cross, churches, or through any government agency, encourage your family and friends that are experiencing the effects of any natural or man made disaster to reach out to any mental health services offered.
