Ethics concerns how we make moral decisions. Nowhere is this decision making process more important than when a mental health professional faces an ethical dilemma. An ethical dilemma occurs when we are forced to choose between two different actions, and choosing one action will mean that another good is sacrificed. The following material provides a proper understanding of ethical theory and the nature of the ethical dilemma. This online course builds on the work of leading experts, including Jeffery Mitchell, Ph.D., developing a unique approach to crisis debriefing with groups of trauma survivors. William Worden, Ph.D.'s "five life management skills" are applied to expand and clarify crisis debriefing techniques. Mental health professionals gain a practical and effective method for working with individuals or groups of trauma survivors.
Topics include: the purpose of crisis debriefing, the difference between counseling and crisis debriefing and the six phases of crisis, as experienced by the trauma survivor. Special issues are explored, including suicide events, murder, dealing with personality disorders in group, and simple versus complex PTSD. Controversies in the field of crisis debriefing are noted. Finally, the necessary components of crisis debriefing are presented, along with guidelines. This course helps mental health professionals become more aware of the ethical dimensions of practice. Counselors and therapists deal with ethical questions in their daily lives on a regular basis, even if they don't always stop to think intentionally about choices as ethical decision-makers. Professionals working with clients who are often fragile and vulnerable must cultivate a keen awareness of ethical issues. First, a basic outline of ethical theory is presented which explores principles that guide ethical thinking. This online course makes a complex subject relatively easy to understand. Ethical issues concerning boundaries and dual relationships are among the most complex and difficult for the mental health professional. Other than explicit prohibitions concerning sexual contact with clients, many of the boundary situations which arise are not easy to assess ethically. What constitutes a boundary violation in one situation may be ethically acceptable in a similar situation. The course guides mental health professionals in sorting through boundary crossings, boundary violations, and dual relationships in order to discern what constitutes not only the highest standards for ethical behavior, but the highest standards for practice.
